3D scanning (also referred as laser scanning or 3D imaging) is a measurement procedure that allows you to replicate an object in 3D on a computer. With this accurate 3D object you can inspect, modify, redesign, remodel, replicate the object or simply use the data for archiving and documentation.

How it works?
Different scanners work in different ways. However, they all basically measure the distance between itself and a number of points on the target object in a XYZ coordinate system. All the measurement points have the same reference, so a 3-Dimensional representation of the object is produced on the screen just by drawing all the points measured.
From here on we obtain a triangle mesh (through a process call merge). All the dots basically stitch together in the same object.
Using a mesh, it’s possible to compare the measurements with the original CAD model to generate an inspection report, or use the mesh as a base to obtain a new CAD model of the part, or use the mesh for animation purposes (like in TV and film).
